Look Up! The Lyrid Meteor Shower is Here.

Meteor

Around April 21–22, you may be able to spot shooting stars streaking across the sky during the Lyrid meteor shower. The best time to look is after midnight before sunrise, and no telescope is needed—just a dark sky and a little patience!

A meteor shower occurs when tiny bits of rock from space enter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up, creating glowing streaks of light in the sky called “shooting stars.”

Artemis II Update

Last month we learned about NASA’s Artemis II mission (click HERE if you missed it), which will send four astronauts on a trip around the Moon and back to Earth! This mission is an important step as NASA prepares for future missions that will land astronauts on the Moon again.

The launch was originally expected in March, but NASA decided to do more testing on the rocket and spacecraft to make sure everything is working perfectly. Right now, NASA is working toward launch opportunities beginning April 1, once the rocket returns to the launch pad.

Don’t Forget to Become Part of History!

Artemis II

Join the adventure as NASA prepares to send four astronauts on Artemis II, the first crewed mission of the Artemis program, flying around the Moon and back in 2026. You can submit your name to fly aboard the Orion spacecraft on a special memory chip and even download a digital boarding pass to celebrate being part of this historic journey as NASA takes the next step toward future Moon landings and eventual human missions to Mars!

STEM Making Headlines

What was that weird cloud over Tampa Bay? On the morning of March 4, 2026, many people in Florida saw a strange glowing cloud in the sky. It looked a little like a jellyfish or a giant glowing bubble!

The cloud was actually created by a SpaceX rocket launch from Cape Canaveral. As the rocket traveled high into the sky, it released gases like water vapor. These gases spread out and formed a large plume that looked like a cloud.

Because the launch happened just before sunrise, the Sun was already shining on the rocket plume high above Earth, even though it was still darker closer to the ground. The sunlight made the plume glow and spread out, creating the unusual shape people saw in the sky.

Scientists sometimes call this effect a “space jellyfish” because the glowing plume can look like the body and tentacles of a jellyfish floating through the sky.

From Space Jellyfish to Sea Jellyfish

The glowing cloud from the recent SpaceX launch may have looked like a giant jellyfish in the sky—but real jellyfish live much closer to home! These fascinating ocean animals drift through the water using gentle pulses and glowing colors that can look just as otherworldly as anything in space. Take a moment to watch these incredible aquatic invertebrates in action.

Matilda Update

Our adopted calf, Matilda, has been busy growing! She shot up 4 inches this month—that’s like stacking two juice boxes on top of each other.

She now weighs 360 pounds, about the same as a piano, and stands 46 inches tall, roughly the height of a second grader!

Matilda now lives with a few of her herdmates in a new outdoor group pen. She loves hanging out with her new buddies, and it’s helping her learn how to socialize with other calves.
