Dual Enrollment
Everglades Preparatory Academy has partnered with Miami Dade College to provide college courses to EPA students. Dual Enrollment is free and provides an opportunity to build a college GPA and complete courses toward an associate degree. Additionally, dual enrollment classes prepare students for a successful transition to the college environment. Dual enrollment students can attend MDC events & clubs and access the same services as traditional students.
Qualifications
- GPA: A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
- Passing State Assessments: Students must have passing scores on required state assessments.
- Current Grades: Students must maintain a C or higher in all high school courses. Struggling students may be denied future Dual Enrollment opportunities to ensure focus on high school graduation.
- Previous Dual Enrollment Grades: Earn A's or B's in all prior Dual Enrollment courses. A grade of C or lower may prevent future participation.
- Test Scores: Students must meet or exceed the following test score requirements:
- PERT (taken within 2 years):
- Reading: 106
- Writing: 103
- Math: 123
- SAT (taken within 2 years):
- Critical Reading/Verbal: 440
- Math: 440
- ACT (taken within 2 years):
- English: 17
- Reading: 19
- Math: 21
- PERT (taken within 2 years):
- Algebra I EOC: Score a 3 or higher on the Algebra I EOC in 9th grade.
- FAST ELA: Score Level 3 or higher on the FAST ELA assessment.
How many Dual Enrollment courses can a student take?
- All students must take the First Year Experience Orientation (SLS 1106) course to begin their Dual Enrollment career.
- In 2024-25 and beyond, 11th and 12th grade students may take up to 9 credits (three courses) per semester.
- In 2024-25 and beyond, 11th and 12th grade students with transportation may be permitted to leave campus after 2nd block based on Dual Enrollment schedule. If a student does not have transportation, they must have a full schedule at EPA
- In 2024-2025 and beyond, students in 11th and 12th grade who wish to participate in leaving campus after second block must take 9 credit (three courses) per semester. Otherwise, they must have a full day schedule at EPA and take their dual enrollment courses outside of school hours.
- Courses must follow a defined associate degree pathway.
Steps to Enroll: This step is required for all students in each semester of dual enrollment.
- Meet eligibility requirements stated above.
- Complete the Dual Enrollment application on the MDC website.
- Meet with MDC advisor to get referral for ACCUPLACER exam if you have not taken the SAT or ACT
- Submit paperwork on MDC portal.
- Once approved, register for approved courses with guidance of Ms. Hutchinson, CAP advisor. Meeting with the CAP advisor is a crucial part of the Dual Enrollment registration process to receive guidance on course selection based on your post-secondary goals.
